The last rites of former Gujarat Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Rupani, who tragically died in the recent Air India crash, began today in Rajkot with full state honours.
The identity of Rupani was confirmed through DNA testing three days after the devastating crash of Air India Flight in Ahmedabad, with the test results arriving at 11:10 am on Sunday.
A large gathering of political leaders, supporters, and citizens paid their final respects as the funeral procession made its way through the city. The government has announced a day of mourning in Gujarat to honour the late leader’s service and contributions.
Rupani was aboard Air India Flight 171, a Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, which crashed just seconds after takeoff on Thursday afternoon.
The flight, en route to London from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members. All on board perished in the crash—except for British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh—after the aircraft slammed into the hostel building of BJ Medical College, engulfing the area in thick black smoke.
Rupani was travelling to London to visit his wife and daughter, reports suggested.
Earlier in the day, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel laid a wreath and paid his last respects to former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose sudden demise in the Air India plane crash has left the state in mourning.
CM Bhupendra Patel, along with senior cabinet ministers, paid a solemn tribute at the mortuary block of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where Vijay Rupani’s mortal remains were placed for public homage.
