On Sunday, investigators from the United States and the United Kingdom visited the crash site of Air India Flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad as part of the ongoing probe into the June 12 disaster that killed at least 274 people, including passengers, crew, and residents on the ground. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport, leading to a massive international investigation effort.

A 10-member team from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) arrived in Ahmedabad on June 15 to examine the crash site and collaborate with Indian agencies. A team of aviation experts from the United Kingdom was also present on site. Both teams reviewed physical evidence and began early-stage coordination with India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

What Evidence Is Being Analysed In The Investigation?

Investigators are examining multiple sources of data and footage to determine what caused the crash. The following evidence is currently under scrutiny:

  • The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), both recovered from the wreckage
  • CCTV footage from BJ Medical College and Ahmedabad Airport
  • A video recorded by a local resident named Aryan, which shows the aircraft’s descent, wing position, and orientation just before impact

These materials are being synchronised to reconstruct the timeline of the crash and pinpoint possible anomalies.

Was Bird Strike Considered As A Possible Cause?

The possibility of a bird hit is being examined. However, identifying conclusive evidence has proven difficult. The crash led to a massive fire, killing several birds and stray animals at the site, which has complicated the task of recovering an identifiable carcass linked to engine ingestion. As of June 16, the bird strike theory remains one of several possibilities under consideration, not a confirmed cause.

Why Is The Eyewitness Video Important?

The video of the air crash, recorded by Aryan, is emerging as key evidence since it captures the position of the plane, the wings, and other visual details. The video, along with black box recordings and CCTV inputs, is being integrated into a detailed reconstruction of AI-171’s final moments.

Given the significance of the footage, Aryan has been questioned by the police, according to sources. He was reportedly asked what he saw before he began recording. Investigators consider him a key eyewitness to the crash. Locals in Aryan’s neighbourhood told CNN-News18 that the sound made by the aircraft was unlike anything they had heard before, further prompting the probe team to speak with him for contextual insight.

What Are The Next Steps In The Investigation?

Following the site visit by US and UK experts, the AAIB is expected to proceed with:

  • Detailed analysis of FDR and CVR data
  • Cross-verification with visual and radar records
  • Ongoing coordination with international regulatory teams

Funeral Of Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani to Be Held Today

Three days after the crash, DNA analysis confirmed the identity of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as one of the victims. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the confirmation report came at 11:10 am on June 15.

Rupani’s mortal remains will be handed over to his family today at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where they are expected to arrive by 11 am. After the completion of formal procedures, the body will be flown to Rajkot, with arrival expected between 12:30 pm and 2 pm.

Before the final rites, his body will be kept for public viewing for an hour, followed by a funeral procession at 4 pm. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, BJP Gujarat president CR Patil, and other senior leaders are expected to attend. The Gujarat government has declared a one-day state mourning to honour the former chief minister.
