Air India Plane Crashes In Ahmedabad: Heavy smoke is visible from Dharpur near the Meghaninagar area.
The deadly crash of Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport brought back the horrific memories of the 1988 accident that killed 133 people. Just two people survived after sustaining injuries. One was them was a textile businessman, Ashok Agarwal, who was in 2020 found dead at his home in Prahladnagar area of the city. In the 1988 crash, he had lost his wife, then 22, and their 11-month-old daughter Ruhi.
Gujarat police had said that a sanitation worker of the apartment where Agarwal resided grew suspicious as a foul smell was coming out of Agarwal’s flat. He informed the security personnel and other residents who broke the door and found the decomposed body of the businessman. A police officer later said the postmortem revealed that Agarwal died of cardiac arrest.
Besides Agarwal, the other person who survived the crash was Vinod Rewa Shankar Tripathi. The accident took place on October 19, 1988 when Indian Airlines Flight 113 was on final approach to Ahmedabad Airport (AMD).
Reports stated that Boeing 737‑200 (VT‑EAH) arriving from Mumbai crashed in poor visibility, hitting trees and a high‑tension pylon about 2.5 km from runway 23.
Of the 135 onboard, 129 were passengers and six were crew members. The accident was ruled a controlled flight into terrain due to pilot and ATC error under foggy conditions.
Other Mishaps That Took Place At Ahmedabad Airport:
2010’s Jet Airways Flight 2510: In July 22, 2010, an ATR‑based flight from Indore landed at Ahmedabad where the nose gear collapsed on touchdown. There were 57 passengers and 4 crew. No fatalities were reported, although some sustained minor injuries. The cause was tire burst leading to landing gear failure.
2018’s Runway Disruption Due To A Cow: In June 2018, a stray cow wandered onto the runway, prompting two aircraft to abort landing and causing delays — including one cargo flight diverted and five domestic flights stalled. No injury occurred but the incident raised airport safety concerns.
