The investigation into the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London, is being led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES HERE
To assist in the probe, the United Kingdom’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and the United States’ National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are also participating in the probe, given the involvement of British nationals and the aircraft’s American manufacturer, Boeing.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s civil aviation regulator, is overseeing compliance and safety standards related to the incident. Boeing has pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
Together, these agencies aim to determine the cause of the crash and implement measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad while en route to London, killing all 242 people on board and several others on the ground as it crashed into a hostel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Air India CEO visited the crash site and the hospital where patients were admitted.

A Look At Agencies Taking Part In Probe
India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB): The AAIB is India’s nodal agency for probing civil aviation accidents and will lead the investigation into the Air India crash.
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA): As India’s civil aviation regulator, the DGCA will oversee safety compliance and provide regulatory support during the investigation. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is India’s civil aviation regulatory authority, responsible for overseeing the safety and regulation of air transport services. Its key functions include enforcing civil aviation rules, maintaining air safety and airworthiness standards, and coordinating with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB): The UK AAIB will assist in the probe since the crash occurred near London and involved British airspace and nationals.
US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB): The NTSB is participating due to the aircraft being a US-manufactured Boeing jet and will offer technical expertise and support.
Boeing: As the manufacturer of the aircraft, Boeing will cooperate with investigators by providing engineering data, technical insights, and safety recommendations.
