The shocking murder of Raja Raghuvanshi has gripped Indore, exposing a chilling story of betrayal. Found dead under suspicious circumstances, Raghuvanshi’s case has led to the arrest of his wife Sonam and four others, including Raj Kushwaha—all of whom have reportedly confessed during initial questioning.
Beneath the tragedy lies a deeper narrative: the missed red flags and neglected advice that, if taken seriously, might have changed the course of events.
- Horoscope Warning Ignored: In 2024, when marriage talks began, Raghuvanshi’s family advised postponing the wedding after examining Sonam’s horoscope. However, Sonam’s family insisted on proceeding that year, and the marriage went ahead despite the warning.
- Contact with Lover Post-Marriage: Sonam maintained communication with her former lover through chats, calls, and secret meetings even after marrying Raghuvanshi. Despite spending most of his time with her, Raghuvanshi never suspected her excuses and dismissals. Not just that—whenever Raghuvanshi tried to call Sonam before their marriage, she would often respond with a curt, “I’m busy,” raising early doubts that went unaddressed.
- Refused Physical Closeness: Post-marriage, Sonam kept physical distance, citing a visit to Kamakhya Mata as a prerequisite to intimacy. Raghuvanshi might have seen this as a spiritual vow, ignoring the underlying issue.
- Changed Honeymoon Destination: Raghuvanshi’s original honeymoon plans were changed at Sonam’s insistence, who expressed a preference for Shillong. Though he may have hesitated at first—especially after learning that Sonam had visited the city before—he eventually agreed, hoping to start their marriage on a harmonious note. Unbeknownst to him, Sonam had already made up her mind. Familiar with Shillong, she had deliberately chosen it as the setting to carry out a plan that now appears chillingly premeditated.
- Insistence On Gold And Cash: Before their trip, Sonam convinced Raghuvanshi to carry a significant amount of gold and cash on their honeymoon—a decision that, in hindsight, may have been his gravest mistake. Strangely, Raghuvanshi never questioned the need for such valuables on a routine vacation. He didn’t ask why they needed to risk carrying gold and money when theft or loss during travel was a real possibility. There seemed to be no practical reason for such a large amount of cash and jewellery. Yet, trusting his wife and wanting to avoid conflict, Raghuvanshi gave in to her request—unaware of the sinister intent behind it.
- Chose A Secluded Hotel And Using Back Door: Most couples on their honeymoon choose hotels in central or lively areas. However, Raja Raghuvanshi, at Sonam’s insistence, booked a hotel in a relatively secluded location. Strangely, Sonam also insisted on leaving the hotel only through the back door. Raghuvanshi may have questioned this unusual behaviour, but it’s likely she offered an explanation—or perhaps he dismissed it as part of her preference for privacy.
- Unnoticed Stalking: While walking through Shillong with his wife Sonam or riding a scooter around the city, Raja Raghuvanshi had no idea he was being followed. Whether during hotel departures or sightseeing, he remained unaware of any looming danger. Even if Sonam discouraged him from paying attention to passersby or urged him to ignore certain things, Raghuvanshi didn’t sense that something was amiss.
- Ignored Behavioural Changes: Before and after the marriage, Sonam’s emotional distance, quietness, and limited communication could have been warning signs. But Raghuvanshi appeared to overlook them, possibly attributing her behaviour to the initial nervousness of a newly married life. What seemed like hesitation or shyness may, in reality, have been early indicators of a deeper, hidden intent—signs that went unnoticed until it was too late.
Meanwhile, as the investigation into Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder deepens, conflicting claims have emerged between the prime accused, Sonam, and her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha. While Sonam has told police she acted under pressure from Raj, he has alleged that she masterminded the killing and manipulated him into taking part.
Raj’s family has defended him, describing him as a “simple, hardworking boy” and claiming he has been wrongly framed. Meghalaya Police DIG (Eastern Range) Davis NR Marak said both suspects have admitted involvement in the conspiracy, but each blames the other for planning the crime.
All five accused were produced in a Shillong court on June 11 and sent to eight days of police custody. Investigators are recording their statements separately and plan to confront them face-to-face to resolve the contradictions. Marak added that the truth will be pieced together through cross-examination and analysis of digital evidence.
