Rescue efforts are underway after a bridge collapsed in Pune.
At least two persons died and several tourists were reportedly swept away after an iron bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune collapsed on Sunday afternoon, according to officials. At least 10-15 people are feared trapped, while some people have been rescued.
The bridge is located in the Kundamala area, which has been experiencing heavy rains over the past few days. However, it was not raining when the bridge collapsed, according to police officials.
The bridge collapse took place at around 2 pm, while tourists were spending their weekend on the bridge. After receiving information of the collapse, local police, villagers and disaster relief workers reached the spot and initiated rescue efforts.
Locals said the bridge collapsed due to overcrowding. NDRF teams reached the spot to begin rescue efforts. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, citing initial reports, that some people were trapped while others were swept away.
As per the latest reports, two people have died, while two more unresponsive persons and a wounded person were also rescued from the site.
According to the information received from the Talegaon local police station, around 6 to 7 people were rescued, and their condition is stable. The injured people were sent to the hospital for treatment. The police are investigating the exact number of people who have been swept away.
Kundamala, a popular picnic destination, was bustling with around 20-25 tourists enjoying the monsoon when the bridge suddenly collapsed. The bridge, built three decades ago, had long been a concern for locals who warned about its weakening condition. It had even been closed for several days recently due to overdue maintenance work.
