Delhi-NCR weather update: Rain lashed parts of Noida
Delhi got a welcome respite from the scorching heatwave as Sunday’s rainfall lowered temperatures and improved air quality. The downpour, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, hit various parts of the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of strong winds and thunderstorms in the city and advised people to stay indoors for safety.
As per the IMD, heavy rain and storms hit Delhi early in the morning, with wind speeds reaching between 80 and 100 kmph.
Heavy rain and strong winds lashed areas like Krishi Bhavan, Rafi Marg, and Udyog Bhawan. Safdarjung witnessed two intense thundersqualls, with wind speeds reaching 82 kmph and 104 kmph, respectively.
The IMD advised people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, warning that strong winds and flying debris made roads hazardous. The heavy downpour also led to traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Delhi was sweltering in extreme heat before the rain, with temperatures soaring above 43°C in several areas on Thursday. Ayanagar recorded the highest at 45.0°C, followed by Palam (44.5°C), Ridge (43.6°C), Lodhi Road (43.4°C), and Safdarjung (43.3°C).
The IMD had earlier warned of potential heatwave conditions in Delhi, with temperatures possibly hitting 45°C. However, Sunday’s rain brought much-needed relief, offering a welcome respite from the sweltering heat.
