Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson issued his first statement on Thursday following the tragic crash of an Air India flight shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

In a video statement shared on X, Wilson described the incident as a “difficult day” for the airline and extended his deep sorrow over the loss and suffering caused.

“This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India,” Wilson said. “Our efforts are now focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones.”

The flight, AI171, was operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and was on its way from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick when the accident occurred. According to Wilson, 230 passengers and 12 crew members were on board at the time of the crash.

The passengers included: 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals and 1 Canadian national.

Wilson confirmed that injured passengers were taken to nearby hospitals by local authorities. He also said that Air India is working closely with officials on all emergency efforts and has dispatched a special team of caregivers to Ahmedabad to provide further support to the affected.

“We are actively working with the authorities on all emergency response efforts. A special team of caregivers from Air India is on their way to Ahmedabad to provide additional support,” he added.

In response to growing concern from families and friends of passengers, Wilson announced a dedicated helpline for those seeking information. “We know that many people are concerned for the welfare of their loved ones. We have set up a special helpline that friends and family can reach us at.”

“We understand that people are eager for information and please know that we will continue to share accurate and timely information as soon as we can. Anything we report must be factual and not speculative. We owe that to everyone involved,” Air India CEO stated.

While an investigation is underway, Wilson said it will take time. For now, the airline’s teams are “working around the clock” to assist passengers, crew, families, and investigators.

“For now, our teams are working around the clock to support passengers, crew and their families, as well as investigators, however we can. Thank you,” he concluded.
